Personal profile


Sally Wightman is a postgraduate researcher. Her PhD, which she began in 2019, investigates the role of tradition, as understood through the lens of Alasdair MacIntyre's Thomistic Aristotelian ethics, in the experience and conceptualisation of meaningful work. Her study adopts a comparative case study approach using qualitative methods featuring Christian and secular youth homelessness charities in the UK. Sally has taught at levels 4 and 5 in the areas of HRM and responsible business and is also a member of the Management, Spirituality and Religion community at the Academy of Management. Prior to starting her PhD, Sally completed her undergraduate degree also at Newcastle Business School where she first took interest to the topic of meaningful work. She has practical work experience working in the charity sector.

Research interests

Sally’s research interests predominantly lie in the area of responsible business. They include meaningful work, ‘work as a calling’, MacIntyrean business ethics especially regarding MacIntyre’s work on traditions but also on practices, and management and religion with particular interest in Christianity. So far Sally has largely conducted her empirical work in the context of faith-based organisations. She is open to collaborating on journal articles, book chapters and qualitative research projects.
