The complex nature of the metal cutting process is described along with the challenges this poses to the novel materials technologies and surface engineering methods. Acoustic emission is shown as a valuable technique for in-situ monitoring of the cutting process. The influences of design and tool geometry on the product quality is described. Surface engineering technologies, when used in a scientific and systematic way can offer possibilities of improved performance, life and the ultimate product quality.
