Effective communication is fundamental to holistic care and positive outcomes for patients affected by aphasia. However, when patients are unable to communicate verbally, the standard of nurse-patient interaction is often poor. In a summary of our recent discussion paper, we use the theory of human-scale development as a framework to discuss the impact of aphasia on health and wellbeing. We suggest strategies to improve nurse-patient communication and quality of life for patients with aphasia.
