Film director and academic Len Collin, challenges representations of disability through the medium of fiction film, utilizing Professor Colin Barnes’s 1992 paper Disabling Imagery and the Media as a manifesto and guide to best practice, during the production of the feature film Sanctuary. Thereby challenging the film and TV industry to improve it’s record on disability representation and providing insight into methods of working with actors who have intellectual disabilities. This work is contextualized by exploring the themes of representation and the relevant work that has appeared on our screens before.
