There are several industrial devices in which energy conversion occurs through turbulent premixed flames. Gas turbine combustion chambers, afterburners of turbojet engines, and spark-ignited reciprocating engines are the main examples, and they support the research for understanding such turbulent flames. The first research specifically devoted to turbulent premixed flames has been conducted around 1940, by Damkhler [1] in Germany and Shchelkin and others in Russia [2]. Finally, in 1956 the first special session of the (International) Symposium on Combustion devoted to the structure and propagation of turbulent flames was held during the sixth edition at the University of Yale (USA).
